Cartridge housing leaking — O-ring and thread problems
Short answer: Around 90 percent of housing leaks are caused by a worn or badly seated O-ring. The fix is simple — remove it, clean it, apply silicone grease and seat it properly. If it is worn, replace it; O-rings are inexpensive.

First, locate the leak
| Where it leaks | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| At the joint (middle of the housing) | O-ring — most common |
| At the inlet or outlet thread | Insufficient PTFE tape, or worn thread |
| At the air release valve | Valve loose or washer worn |
| From the housing body | A crack — replacement needed |
| Around the pressure gauge | Thread seal |
Cause 1: The O-ring
What happens
- Over time the rubber hardens and loses its elasticity
- Repeated opening without grease wears it
- It shifts out of position while changing a cartridge
- It swells from chemical exposure or hot water
The fix
- Stop the pump and release pressure
- Open the housing and remove the O-ring
- Inspect it — replace it if flattened, cut or hardened
- Clean the groove it sits in — no grit or debris
- Apply a thin film of silicone grease
- Seat the O-ring properly in the groove, with no part protruding
- Close the housing — hand tight only
Cause 2: Over-tightening
People assume tightening harder will stop a leak, but the opposite happens:
- The O-ring is flattened and stops sealing
- The plastic thread wears
- The housing can crack
The correct approach: tighten by hand until firm, then just a little more. Use a spanner for opening only, never for closing.
Cause 3: Thread problems
If the leak is at the inlet or outlet thread:
- Remove the fitting and strip off all the old PTFE tape
- Apply fresh tape in the direction of tightening
- Wrap four to six turns, no more
- Retighten — again without excessive force
If the thread itself is worn: use a brass insert housing (₹682–761), where brass is moulded into the thread so it does not wear.
Cause 4: The housing has aged
PP housings become brittle with time and sun exposure. Signs:
- Colour change (yellowing or whitening)
- Fine cracks appearing
- A chalky feel to the surface
Replace such a housing immediately — it can fail at any moment. A new PP housing starts at ₹236; where it is exposed to sun, consider SS or relocating it.
Six ways to prevent recurrence
- Replace the O-ring every second or third cartridge change — it is cheap, leaks are not
- Always use silicone grease
- Tighten by hand, not with a spanner
- Keep the groove clean — a single grain of grit can cause a leak
- Protect the housing from sunlight, or use SS
- Keep spare O-rings so you can replace one immediately
When the housing must be replaced
- A crack in the body
- Thread completely worn (still leaking with fresh PTFE tape)
- The plastic has become brittle
- The O-ring groove itself is damaged
Options and prices are in our housing size guide, starting at ₹236.
A safety note
- Stop the pump
- Close the line valve
- Release pressure through the air release valve
- Only then open it
The hidden cost of a small leak
People often ignore a small drip, but:
- Water reaching panels and wiring — a short circuit risk
- Algae on the floor — a slipping hazard
- Reduced pressure — plant flow falls
- Wasted water
So fix a leak as soon as you see it — it is a ten minute job.

Why is my cartridge housing leaking?
In around ninety percent of cases the cause is a worn or badly seated O-ring. It can also leak at the thread where PTFE tape is insufficient, or because the housing has aged and become brittle.
Should I tighten the housing harder if it leaks?
No. Over-tightening flattens the O-ring so it stops sealing, and it wears the plastic thread or cracks the housing. Hand tightening is correct.
What grease should be used on an O-ring?
Only silicone grease. Ordinary oil or grease swells and degrades rubber, whereas silicone grease is safe for rubber and considerably extends O-ring life.
How often should the O-ring be replaced?
Every second or third cartridge change. O-rings are inexpensive while a leak can cause real damage, so this is not worth economising on.
What should I do before opening a housing?
Stop the pump, close the line valve and release all pressure through the air release valve. Opening a housing under pressure is dangerous because the lid can be thrown off.
