What ORP is, and why it is measured in cooling towers

Aqua Filtration System, Faridabad · 9+ years in water treatment · Updated September 2026

Short answer: ORP stands for Oxidation Reduction Potential, and it indicates how much disinfecting power the water has. It is measured in millivolts. Adding chlorine raises ORP, and as that chlorine is consumed the ORP falls.

The real value: it tells you whether the chlorine is actually working, which measuring chlorine concentration alone does not. That is why automatic dosing in cooling towers and swimming pools runs on ORP.

ORP and chlorine are not the same thing

Chlorine concentration in ppm and ORP measure different things:

Why that matters: if the water pH rises, the same 2 ppm of chlorine becomes far less effective. A ppm meter will still report everything as normal while bacteria survive. ORP catches this.

What the reading means

ORP (mV)Interpretation
Below 400Weak disinfection — bacteria can survive
500 – 600Acceptable for general use
650 – 750Good disinfection (pool and cooling tower target)
Above 800Excessive — metal damage and wasted chemical

According to WHO guidance, at around 650 mV bacteria in water are inactivated within seconds.

Why cooling towers use it

A cooling tower is an ideal environment for biofilm and bacteria — warm water, air, light and nutrients all present. Using ORP here means:

For biocides see our ZeroScale cooling tower chemicals, in both oxidising and non-oxidising types.

In swimming pools

Pools are kept at 650 to 750 mV. Along with that the pH must stay between 7.2 and 7.6, because as pH rises the effectiveness of chlorine falls sharply.

So pools usually control both pH and ORP, using a dual system such as the Edose NEUTRA/CHLORO DUAL (₹51,450).

Our advice: for cooling towers and pools take ORP — it is cheaper and does the job better. If you must record ppm for regulatory purposes, as with packaged drinking water, you need the Chlorine Meter CL 850.

Looking after an ORP sensor

One essential point — pH comes first

ORP control only works if the pH is right. Above pH 8, no amount of chlorine will raise the ORP — you will simply be wasting chemical. So correct the pH first, then control ORP.

For pH control see our PO 650 guide.

Frequently asked questions

What does ORP mean?

ORP stands for oxidation reduction potential. It is measured in millivolts and indicates how much disinfecting power the water has. Adding chlorine raises it, and as the chlorine is consumed it falls.

What ORP value should be maintained?

In swimming pools and cooling towers, generally six hundred and fifty to seven hundred and fifty millivolts. Below four hundred the disinfection is considered weak, and above eight hundred chemical is wasted and metal can be attacked.

What is the difference between ORP and chlorine ppm?

Chlorine ppm tells you how much chlorine was added, while ORP tells you how effective that chlorine is. At higher pH the same chlorine works far less well, and only ORP detects that — a ppm meter does not.

Why is ORP used in cooling towers?

It allows biocide to be dosed automatically, only when it is actually needed. That saves chemical and prevents biofilm, which otherwise degrades heat transfer and increases the electricity bill.

Does pH need to be correct before ORP control works?

Yes, absolutely. Above pH eight the ORP will not rise however much chlorine is added. So pH must be brought under control first, after which ORP control becomes effective.
