Rotameter float stuck — cleaning and repair guide
Short answer: There are only three real causes — scale build-up, dirt and particles, or incorrect installation such as mounting at an angle. In most cases opening the rotameter and gently cleaning the tube and float solves it. A replacement is rarely needed.
But if it keeps happening, the real problem is not the rotameter — it is your water. Both fixes are covered below.

First, identify the symptom
| What you see | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Float sits at the bottom while water is flowing | Float stuck, or deposits in the tube |
| Float pinned at the top | Flow above range, or fitted upside down |
| Float oscillating, never settling | Trapped air, or fitted too close to a pump or elbow |
| Reading slowly dropping over months | Scale on the float has made it heavier |
| Tube cloudy, nothing visible | Dirty water or algae |
Step-by-step cleaning
- Isolate — close the valves on both sides of the rotameter. This is exactly why we recommend fitting a bypass line.
- Open it — loosen the union or nut gently. The tube is acrylic and can crack under force.
- Remove the float — take out the stopper and slide the float out. Note which way up it sits, as it must go back the same way.
- Clean gently — mild detergent with a soft cloth or sponge. Never scrub, and never use a wire brush or scouring pad. A scratched tube is permanently ruined.
- For scale — soak for 15 to 20 minutes in water with a little acidic cleaner, or a mild vinegar solution, then rinse thoroughly.
- Dry and reassemble — check the O-ring and replace it if worn. Reassemble, open the line slowly and check for leaks.
Fixing each symptom
Float pinned at the top
Two possible reasons. First, your flow has exceeded the rotameter range, meaning the wrong model was fitted and a larger one is needed — see the selection guide. Second, the rotameter is installed upside down. In a variable area rotameter water must always flow bottom to top.
Float oscillating
This is almost always an installation issue:
- Fitted immediately after a pump or elbow — at least 5 pipe diameters of straight line are needed upstream
- Air trapped in the line — vent it from the highest point
- Control valve fitted upstream — it should be downstream
Fouling again and again
This is not a fault of the rotameter but of the water. Fit filtration before it:
- Cartridge filter — 5 or 10 micron, the most common and cheapest solution
- Y-type screen filter — for coarse particles, and it can be cleaned and reused
Reading slowly dropping
This is the most dangerous symptom because nobody notices it. A thin layer of scale forms on the float, making it heavier, so it settles lower than it should. You believe the flow has fallen when in fact it has not changed.
For this reason the float should be cleaned once a year even if there is no visible problem.
When replacement is unavoidable
- The tube is scratched — the reading will never be correct again
- The tube is cracked — a leak risk
- The scale markings have worn off
- The float has worn thin — it no longer weighs what it should
Replacement is inexpensive — 15NB models such as F100, F200 and F500 start at ₹504.
Four ways to prevent it
- Fit a filter upstream of the rotameter — the single most effective step
- Provide a bypass line — you will not have to shut the plant down to clean it
- Clean the float once a year, whether or not there is a problem
- Keep antiscalant dosing correct — less scale forms. See our antiscalant range

How should a rotameter float be cleaned?
Mild detergent with a soft cloth or sponge is enough. For scale, soak it for fifteen to twenty minutes in a mild acidic cleaning solution. Never use a wire brush or scouring pad, because a scratched tube is permanently ruined and the reading will never be correct again.
What does it mean if the float is pinned at the top?
Either your flow has exceeded the range of the rotameter, meaning the wrong model was selected, or the meter is installed upside down. Water must always flow from bottom to top through a rotameter. Check both.
How often should a rotameter be cleaned?
If a cartridge filter is fitted upstream, once or twice a year is usually enough. Without a filter, and especially on raw water, cleaning may be needed every two to three months.
Does an oscillating float give a wrong reading?
Yes, only a steady float gives a reliable reading. The usual cause is that the rotameter is fitted immediately after a pump or elbow, or that air is trapped in the line. Leaving straight pipe upstream normally resolves it.
The tube is scratched — can it be repaired?
No. Once an acrylic tube is scratched the mark is permanent and it interferes with the movement of the float, so the rotameter has to be replaced. This is exactly why scrubbing during cleaning must be avoided.
