Flow meter reading wrong — six causes and fixes

Aqua Filtration System, Faridabad · 9+ years in water treatment · Updated September 2026

Short answer: In eight cases out of ten the meter is not faulty — the installation is. The two most common causes are a meter fitted immediately after an elbow or pump, and air trapped in the line.

Before buying a replacement, work through these six checks. Most of the time the problem is fixed at no cost.

Cause 1: Fitted too close to an elbow or pump

This is the most common cause. Water leaving an elbow, valve or pump does not travel in a straight line — it swirls. No meter can read accurately on swirling water.

Fix: at least 5 pipe diameters of straight line before the meter and 3 after. For insertion type meters, make that 10 diameters upstream.

Pipe sizeNeeded upstreamNeeded downstream
15NB (½")~8 cm~5 cm
25NB (1")~13 cm~8 cm
50NB (2")~25 cm~15 cm
100NB (4")~50 cm~30 cm

Cause 2: Air trapped in the line

An air bubble passing through makes the reading jump suddenly. On a rotameter the float dances; on a digital meter the number leaps.

Fix: provide a vent at the highest point of the line. On an electromagnetic meter fit an air release valve (25NB) at ₹210 — a small item that solves a large problem.

Important: always install the meter where the pipe stays completely full. On a falling line the pipe can run partly empty and the reading will always be wrong.

Cause 3: Wrong range meter fitted

If your flow sits at the very bottom of the range (under 20 percent), the reading is hard to take and the error is large.

Fix: choose a model where your normal flow sits mid-scale. The full method is in our rotameter selection guide.

For example, at 300 LPH the F500 is right and the F2400 is not.

Cause 4: Scale or fouling

This is the most deceptive problem because the reading drifts slowly and nobody notices. A thin layer builds up on the float, making it heavier, so it settles lower. You conclude the flow has dropped when it has not.

On a digital meter, deposits on the impeller slow it down and it under-reads.

Fix: clean once a year — the full method is in our float cleaning guide — and fit a cartridge filter upstream.

Cause 5: Meter fitted upside down or at an angle

Cause 6: No earthing on an electromagnetic meter

This affects magnetic meters only, but it is very common. Without proper earthing the reading wanders, or shows a value even at zero flow.

Fix: earth both the meter earthing ring and the pipe properly. Details are in our electromagnetic meter guide.

Quick checklist by symptom

SymptomCheck first
Reading unsteadyAir, distance from elbow, earthing (mag meter)
Reading always lowDeposits on float or impeller, choked cartridge
Reading zero while water flowsFloat jammed, sensor failed, fitted reversed
Reading pinned at maximumRange too small, or fitted reversed
Two meters disagreeRun the bucket test below

The bucket test — check the meter yourself

You can do this with no instruments at all:

  1. Take a container of known volume, say 20 litres
  2. Set a steady flow and start a stopwatch
  3. Note how many seconds it takes to fill
  4. LPH = (litres ÷ seconds) × 3600

Example: 20 litres in 45 seconds → (20 ÷ 45) × 3600 = 1,600 LPH. If the meter shows between 1,550 and 1,650, the meter is fine — a small difference is normal.

When this test is useful: when you suspect the meter is lying, or when two meters disagree. A difference of up to 5 to 7 percent is considered normal.

When the meter really has failed

On digital meters it is often only the sensor that needs replacing, not the whole meter. A 20NB flow sensor costs ₹2,205 against ₹10,500 for a complete meter.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my flow meter reading unsteady?

The usual causes are air trapped in the line, or the meter being fitted too close to an elbow, valve or pump. Leave at least five pipe diameters of straight line before the meter and provide a vent for trapped air.

The meter reads low — is it faulty?

Not necessarily. Scale often builds up on the float or impeller, making it heavier or slower so it under-reads. Clean it first, and if the difference remains, confirm with a bucket test.

How do I do a bucket test?

Time how long a container of known volume takes to fill, then divide litres by seconds and multiply by 3600 to get the actual LPH. Compare that with the meter reading — a difference of five to seven percent is normal.

Two flow meters show different readings — which is right?

A bucket test will tell you which one is closer to the truth. Usually the meter fitted nearer an elbow or pump is the inaccurate one, because the water arrives swirling at that point.

Can I just replace the sensor?

On a digital flow meter, often yes. If the display is working and only the reading has stopped, replacing the sensor is usually enough and costs far less than a complete meter. On a rotameter the whole unit has to be replaced.
