Manual vs automatic multiport valve — which is worth it
Short answer: A manual valve requires somebody to turn the handle through each regeneration step. An automatic valve does it on a timer or on volume. Automatic costs roughly five times more — MPV 0525 STM at ₹2,100 against EVOLVE 0525 STM at ₹9,975.
The decision comes down to one question: will somebody actually do the regeneration on time?

What each involves
Manual valve
An operator turns the handle through each position in sequence — backwash, brine draw, slow rinse, fast rinse, refill and back to service. Each step takes a set number of minutes.
A softener regeneration typically takes 60 to 90 minutes of somebody's attention.
Automatic valve
The valve moves through the sequence itself, either on a timer (every so many days) or on volume (after so many litres). Nobody needs to be present.
Price comparison
| Size and duty | Manual | Automatic (EVOLVE) |
|---|---|---|
| 25NB filter, top | ₹1,732 | ₹9,450 |
| 25NB softener, top | ₹2,100 | ₹9,975 |
| 25NB softener, side | ₹1,838 | ₹10,500 |
| 40NB filter, top | ₹2,468 | ₹13,650 |
| 40NB softener, top | ₹2,730 | ₹14,175 |
| 40NB softener, side | ₹2,572 | ₹14,700 |
What automatic genuinely saves
1. It actually happens
This is the real benefit. Manual regeneration is skipped when someone is busy, on leave, or simply forgets. Hardness then breaks through, and by the time anyone notices the damage is done downstream.
2. Correct timing every cycle
Manual regeneration depends on somebody watching a clock. Cut a step short and the resin is not fully regenerated; leave it long and salt is wasted.
3. Labour
60 to 90 minutes per regeneration, perhaps twice a week, adds up to real time over a year.
4. Volume-based operation
Automatic valves can regenerate on volume treated rather than on days. That means no wasted regeneration in a slow week and no breakthrough in a busy one.
When manual is the sensible choice
- Somebody is present daily and regeneration is a routine task
- Small installations where the cost difference matters
- Infrequent regeneration — once every two or three weeks
- Where there is no reliable power supply — automatic valves need power
When automatic is worth it
- Unmanned or remote installations
- Frequent regeneration — twice a week or more
- Where breakthrough is expensive — a boiler, a process line, or a hotel
- Where staff change frequently and training is inconsistent
- Larger plants where the valve cost is small relative to the whole
A simple way to decide
Work out what a missed regeneration costs you:
- Hard water reaching a boiler → scale on tubes, higher fuel consumption
- Hard water into an RO plant → membrane scaling
- Hard water in a hotel → complaints, scale on fittings
- Hard water in a laundry → poor washing, more detergent
If a single missed regeneration costs more than about ₹8,000, automatic pays for itself the first time it prevents one.
What automatic valves also need
- A power supply at the valve
- Brine switch for automatic MPV — ₹761
- A drain connection able to take the backwash flow
- Correct programming — days or volume, and the step timings
A middle path
On plants with two or three vessels, some users fit an automatic valve on the softener (where timing matters most) and manual valves on the filters (where backwash timing is less critical).
That keeps the cost down while protecting the part of the plant where a missed cycle actually causes damage.

What is the difference between a manual and automatic multiport valve?
A manual valve requires somebody to turn the handle through each regeneration step, which takes sixty to ninety minutes of attention. An automatic valve performs the sequence itself, either on a timer or after a set volume has been treated.
How much more does an automatic valve cost?
Roughly five times as much. A twenty five NB manual softener valve is around two thousand one hundred rupees while the automatic equivalent is close to ten thousand.
Is an automatic valve worth the extra cost?
It depends on what a missed regeneration costs you. If hard water reaching a boiler, RO plant or hotel system would cost more than about eight thousand rupees in damage, the automatic valve pays for itself the first time it prevents one.
What does volume based regeneration mean?
The valve regenerates after a set volume of water has been treated rather than after a set number of days. That avoids wasted regeneration in a slow week and prevents hardness breaking through in a busy one.
What else is needed for an automatic valve?
A power supply at the valve, a brine switch, and a drain able to take the backwash flow. The interval also has to be programmed correctly from your actual hardness and consumption.
