About UF (Ultrafiltration) Plants

An Ultrafiltration plant pushes water through a membrane with pores around 0.01-0.1 micron. It removes suspended solids, turbidity, bacteria, cysts and most viruses, but leaves dissolved salts untouched — so the water keeps its natural minerals and TDS. That makes UF ideal where the source water is clean in taste but unsafe or cloudy.

UF or RO — which one do you need?

If your problem is turbidity, colour, bacteria or suspended matter and the TDS is already acceptable, UF is the right answer and costs far less to run than RO. If the problem is high TDS, hardness, fluoride or salinity, only RO will solve it. Many plants use UF as pre-treatment before RO, because clean UF permeate dramatically extends membrane life.

How a UF plant runs

Feed water passes through the UF module; clean permeate goes to storage while rejected solids build up on the membrane surface. The plant runs a periodic backwash (usually every 30-60 minutes) to flush that layer away, and a chemical clean (CEB/CIP) at longer intervals. Automatic backwash timing is what keeps a UF plant maintenance-free — a manual plant that nobody backwashes will choke within days.

Sizing and pre-treatment

Size on required output in LPH and available feed pressure. Always fit a strainer or 100-200 micron filter ahead of the UF module to keep grit and fibre out of the fibres. Where iron or manganese is present, treat it first — precipitated iron fouls UF fibres and is difficult to reverse.
