About Water Test Kits (SDI & Hardness)

Testing water takes five minutes and saves lakhs. Before designing any plant you need to know what is in the water; after commissioning, regular testing tells you whether the plant is still doing its job. We supply SDI test kits, hardness test kits and reagents for field and plant use.

Hardness test kit

A hardness kit gives you the calcium and magnesium content in ppm using a simple titration — you add drops of reagent to a measured water sample until the colour changes, and the number of drops gives the hardness. This is the number that decides softener sizing, and it is the number to check weekly on softener outlet. If treated water hardness starts climbing, regeneration or resin needs attention.

SDI test kit — the one RO plants need

SDI (Silt Density Index) measures the fouling potential of feed water — how quickly it will clog a membrane. Water is passed through a 0.45 micron filter pad and the time taken is recorded at intervals. Membrane manufacturers typically require SDI below 5, and below 3 for long membrane life. If your membranes keep fouling despite good pre-treatment, an SDI test usually explains why.

What to test and how often

For an RO plant: feed TDS and permeate TDS weekly, feed hardness weekly, SDI when commissioning or when fouling is suspected. For a softener: outlet hardness weekly. For an ETP or STP: pH, DO and settled sludge volume daily. Write the readings down. A trend over weeks tells you far more than a single reading, and auditors ask for records.
