A solenoid valve opens and closes automatically on an electrical signal — it is what lets a control panel start, stop or divert flow without anyone touching a handle. In water treatment they are used for RO inlet control, membrane flushing, auto-drain, water ATM dispensing and dosing line isolation.

NC or NO — get this right

Normally Closed (NC) valves stay shut when there is no power and open when energised — this is the safe default for most water applications, because a power failure stops the flow. Normally Open (NO) valves stay open without power. Choose NC unless you have a specific reason not to; an NO valve on an RO inlet will keep feeding water during a power cut.

Direct acting or diaphragm (pilot operated)?

Direct acting valves work from zero pressure upward — necessary for gravity-fed lines and low-pressure dosing. Diaphragm / semi-lift valves need a minimum differential pressure (often around 0.3-0.5 kg/cm²) to operate, but handle larger sizes and higher flows efficiently. Fitting a diaphragm valve on a gravity line is a common mistake — it simply will not open.

Sizing and material

Match the port size (15NB, 20NB, 25NB and so on) to your line, and confirm the coil voltage — 230V AC and 24V DC are both common, and the wrong coil will burn out. For potable water and RO service, SS304 or brass bodies with EPDM seals are standard; for chemical dosing lines use a body and seal material compatible with that chemical.
