These are the small devices that keep a plant safe and automatic. A pressure switch stops a pump before it damages itself; a level controller fills a tank and stops when full. They cost very little and prevent very expensive failures.

Low pressure and high pressure switches

A low pressure switch on the feed line stops the high-pressure pump when inlet pressure falls — protecting it from running dry when the sump empties or the pre-filter chokes. A high pressure switch stops the plant if discharge pressure rises beyond the safe limit, which can happen if a valve is closed or a membrane is badly scaled. On any RO plant, both are worth fitting.

Setting them correctly

Each switch has a cut-in and cut-out setting with a differential between them. Set the differential too narrow and the pump will hunt, switching on and off rapidly and burning the contactor. Set the low-pressure cut-out just below your normal running inlet pressure — not so low that the pump has already run dry before it trips.

Float switches and level controllers

Float switches are simple and reliable — a floating body tilts and makes or breaks the contact. Mount them where inflow turbulence will not swing them, and keep the cable free to move. Electronic level controllers with probes are better for conductive liquids and where multiple levels (low, high, alarm) are needed. For overhead tank filling, a level controller plus a dry-run-protected pump controller is the standard combination.
