About UV Water Purification Systems

A UV system disinfects water without adding any chemical, taste or odour. Ultraviolet light at 254 nm damages the DNA of bacteria, viruses and cysts so they cannot reproduce. We supply UV systems from small 5 LPH domestic units up to 20,000 LPH industrial systems, along with UV lamps, quartz sleeves, ballasts and spares.

What UV does and does not do

UV is excellent at killing micro-organisms and is widely used as the final step after RO, softening or filtration. But it does not remove TDS, hardness, chlorine, colour or suspended solids, and it leaves no residual protection — water can be recontaminated after the UV chamber. Store treated water in a clean, closed tank and keep the pipe run short.

Sizing a UV system

UV is sized on flow rate and on the required UV dose. Push water through faster than the rated flow and the contact time drops, so disinfection fails even though the lamp is glowing. Also check the water clarity: UV needs clear water. High turbidity or iron shields the organisms from the light, so a pre-filter (5 micron or finer) before the UV is not optional — it is part of the system.

Lamp and sleeve maintenance

This is where most UV systems quietly fail. A UV lamp keeps glowing long after its useful output has dropped — output falls significantly after about 9000 hours (roughly one year), so lamps must be replaced annually even if they still light up. The quartz sleeve also needs cleaning; scale or iron film on the sleeve blocks the UV before it reaches the water. Wipe the sleeve with dilute acid or a soft cloth every few months, handling it carefully as quartz is fragile.
