About Hub-Lateral Distribution Systems

Inside every FRP or MS vessel there is a distribution system — a top distributor and a bottom hub-and-lateral assembly. It is a low-cost item that quietly decides whether the whole filter works. Its job is to spread water evenly across the entire media bed and to hold the media back during service and backwash.

Why even distribution matters

If water enters or leaves at one point instead of being spread across the full cross-section, it carves a shortcut — this is called channelling. The water flows fast through one part of the bed and barely touches the rest. The result is early hardness or turbidity breakthrough even though the media is fresh, and the filter appears to have "failed" long before it should. A correctly designed hub-lateral assembly prevents this.

Slot size and open area

Laterals carry fine slots sized to hold the media while letting water pass. The slot must be smaller than the smallest media particle — otherwise media escapes to drain and you lose bed depth every backwash. Total open area matters too: too little and pressure drop rises, too much and distribution becomes uneven. This is why the assembly should match the media you are actually using, not just the vessel size.

Installation care

Assemble laterals tightly into the hub, check that none are cracked, keep the riser tube centred and taped shut while loading media, and support the assembly so it does not shift when media is poured in. A broken lateral discovered after commissioning means emptying the whole vessel to fix it.
