About Multiport Valves (MPV)

The multiport valve is the control head of a softener or filter — it directs water through service, backwash, rinse, brine draw and refill positions. Get the valve wrong and even a perfectly sized vessel with good resin will underperform. We supply Initiative Engineering multiport valves and accessories for softeners, multigrade filters and carbon filters.

Manual, timer or metered?

Manual MPV — the operator turns the handle through each position. Cheapest, and fine where someone is reliably present. Timer-based automatic — regenerates on a set day and time regardless of usage; simple, but wastes salt in low-usage weeks and under-regenerates in heavy weeks. Metered automatic — counts actual water treated and regenerates only when needed; the most economical on salt and water, and the right choice for hotels, hospitals and industry.

Sizing the valve

Valves are rated for a service flow rate and a vessel size range. Fitting a small valve on a large vessel throttles the flow and gives poor backwash — the bed never lifts properly, so it channels and hardness breaks through early. Match the valve to both your peak flow and the vessel diameter, and confirm the thread/connection size before ordering.

Common problems

Most MPV complaints trace back to three things: a choked brine injector (no brine draw, so no regeneration), worn seals or the piston (water leaking to drain continuously), or low inlet pressure (brine will not draw at all). All three are inexpensive to fix if caught early. If soft water suddenly turns hard after regeneration, check the injector first.
