Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. When it is heated or evaporates, those salts settle as white scale inside geysers, boilers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, washing machines and taps. A water softener removes that hardness using ion-exchange resin, so scale stops forming, soap lathers properly and equipment lasts far longer. We supply softeners for homes, hotels, hospitals, laundries, industries and as pre-treatment ahead of RO plants.
Hard water passes through a bed of cation resin. The resin holds sodium ions and swaps them for the calcium and magnesium in your water — hardness stays on the resin, soft water flows out. Once the resin is saturated it must be regenerated with common salt (NaCl) brine, which flushes the hardness to drain and reloads the resin with sodium. This cycle repeats for years; the resin itself typically lasts a long time if it is not damaged by chlorine or iron.
Two numbers decide everything: your feed water hardness in ppm and your daily water usage in litres. Multiply them to get the total hardness load, and the softener is sized so that regeneration is needed about once a day or once in two days — not every few hours. Flow rate matters too: pushing water through too fast leaves hardness untreated. Manual multiport valve (MPV) softeners cost less and are fine where someone can regenerate on schedule. Automatic valves (timer-based or metered) regenerate on their own — better for hotels, hospitals and plants where nobody should have to remember. Metered valves are the most economical on salt because they regenerate by actual water consumed, not by clock.
Keep the salt tank filled, check soft-water hardness with a test kit weekly, and clean the brine tank occasionally. Ignoring salt is the most common cause of a "softener not working" complaint.
