About Disc & Screen Filters

Disc and screen filters are rugged, reusable filters that remove sand, grit, silt and organic matter before it reaches pumps, drippers, nozzles or fine filters. Unlike cartridges, they are cleaned and reused rather than replaced, which makes them economical where the solids load is high — borewell water, irrigation, cooling towers and pre-filtration duty.

Disc or screen — what is the difference?

A screen filter uses a fine mesh cylinder; particles collect on the surface and are washed off. It works well for hard, sandy material. A disc filter uses a stack of grooved discs pressed together, giving depth filtration — it holds far more organic and fibrous matter (algae, silt, plant matter) before choking, which is why it is preferred on surface water and irrigation systems.

Choosing mesh or micron rating

Ratings are given in mesh or micron — 120 mesh is roughly 130 micron, 155 mesh roughly 100 micron. Choose based on what you are protecting: drip irrigation emitters need finer filtration than a pump suction. Fitting an unnecessarily fine element simply means cleaning it far more often.

Cleaning and pressure drop

Fit pressure gauges before and after the filter. Clean when the pressure difference rises by around 0.5-0.7 kg/cm². Manual filters are opened and rinsed; semi-automatic and automatic versions flush themselves on a timer or on differential pressure, which is worth the extra cost where the water is dirty or the site is unmanned.
